Kayaking!
We headed up to Cape Breton Island - we stayed at Beach View Cottage in South Harbour which was quite remote and very quiet. We saw a large Moose wandering by the road on our 2nd day there and another one resting in the forest a few days later whilst walking down Franey Mountain.
During a Whale watching trip although we saw no whales we did see a pod of Common Dolphins and Atlantic White Sided Dolphins, both of which swam next to the boat to everyones delight.
Cape Breton is an incredible place with many remote areas one would think uninhabitable but there are small communities everywhere. One in particular was Meat Cove at the most Northern tip of Cape Breton. We walked up Meat Cove Mountain which was very hard going as not only was it extremely hot and muggy, the walk was pretty much straight up! The reward at the top was worth it and we treated ourselves to lunch when we got back to the cove. In the tearoom was a fascinating account written by a local woman of life in Meat Cove in 1920 - a very hard life was had back then with everyone supporting each other and coping as best they could.
There are some great walks in the National Park and we did the famous Skyline Trail and walked Franey Mountain. Amazing views from both areas giving a real understanding of the vastness and beauty of this area.
On our last day (Matt's birthday) we went sea kayaking (though it was too rough to kayak in the sea) but we had a great time kayaking around the local cove area with our guide. We were told stories of how his family have lived in the area for many generations and tales of shipwrecks and storms.
From there we headed down the coast to Guysborough for a night then back on to Halifax to catch our flight home.
